No matter how much care and attention you lavish on the paintwork, the chrome or any other part of a good detailing job. If you keep forgetting the engine it will, sooner rather than later, kill the overall effect of all your hard work.

When it comes to maybe reselling the bike, a grimy engine won't do it any favours either. Keeping the engine and the bodywork in good shape will keep the value of the bike, plus make it something to be proud of. In general, especially when it comes to resale, a perfectly detailed engine signifies a well looked after machine. Even the guy at the garage will treat it with the respect your ride truly deserves! Engine detailing involves the same things as bodywork detailing does, cleaning and polishing! Ideally is should be done at least once a month. Before you begin cleaning, the engine needs to be warmed up a bit. Don't go crazy or you'll only get your fingers burnt! For easier access, remove any panels, covers, guards. Anything that might stop you reaching the places you need to! More experienced riders might even remove the gas tank, but if you don't know what you're doing, best to leave that alone. Usually, it's only a couple of bolts to get the tank off, often the seat too. Any electronics which might be left exposed must be protected. If you take off the air filter, block off the carburator. Old hat methods use petroleum based degreasers. They might cut through the grease at ultra speed, but they are too aggressive for all the wires, vinyl, plastic and rubber components. Citrus based cleaners are effective, but some of the latest high tech products are biodegradable, non toxic and low odour. Butyl and acids replaced by modern surfactants, save for just about any surface that can get wet!

When applying engine degreaser, always best to start from the bottom and work your way up. That way you get the hard to reach underside without getting dripped on from above! If you haven't taken off the fenders and tank the spray will take the wax off the paintwork. Even though most of them won't damage it. Wiping off the excess, from the painted surfaces, is a must. Never the less. Depending on which engine degreaser for motorcycle care you choose, the product will usually take anywhere up to five minutes. It also depends on how dirty your engine is. If it's pretty grimy, it's best to take a brush too it! Degreaser should not be allowed to dry, and should be rinsed off thoroughly.
